During October Forest Holme Hospice is showing what it takes to provide palliative and end of life care during the Covid-19 pandemic as part of Hospice Care Week.

The hospice, which covers communities in Poole, Wimborne and the Isle Of Purbeck, is one of more than 200 hospices across the UK taking part in Hospice Care Week (5 – 11 October), led by the national hospice and end of life care charity, Hospice UK, highlighting what it takes to provide care to those who need it most.

This year many independent and NHS hospices, like Forest Holme, are facing financial challenges, with the support they receive from the public being more important than ever before.

Hospice UK estimates that since the Covid crisis begun in March, collectively hospices have lost in the region of £70 million in fundraised income. Forest Holme Hospice Charity has anticipated that it could see a drop in income of up to 40% across its financial year.

Anne Currie, Charity Manager at Forest Holme, said, “Like many charities we have seen our fundraising activities disappear overnight and that has had a significant impact on the amount of money we have been able to raise this year to date. It’s been hard at times, it continues to be challenging but we keep focused on there being light at the end of the tunnel, taking great encouragement from our incredible supporters who have continued to be there for the hospice with their kindness, in a variety of ways, during this difficult time. We’d like to thank them for their wonderful support.”

To mark Hospice Care Week, during the month of October, Forest Holme is encouraging supporters to host a Big Brunch to help raise funds and celebrate the amazing support hospice care workers have provided throughout the pandemic.

Due to the current social distancing guidelines, the charity is hoping to persuade friends, family or colleagues to get involved by being creative – whether it’s by hosting a socially distanced brunch for up to six outside or through organising a virtual brunch for twenty on video call.
