The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole celebrated its 50th anniversary with a weekend of activities to commemorate the special occasion.
Highlights from the weekend, Saturday August 3 and Sunday August 4, included:
- Giant Pass the Parcel
- Live music and Beatles-inspired costumes
- Cartoonist Rose Popay creating portraits
- Giant dancing birthday cakes parading the centre
- Snail mail post box where letters are delivered 12 months later
- Free ice cream with birthday cake flavour
In addition, the much-loved wooden animals returned to the centre to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The hippo, turtle and whale will remain on display for several weeks to continue to commemorate this important milestone for the town’s shopping centre.
John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, commented: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the staff and all the shoppers that helped make our 50th anniversary party such a huge success.
“There was such a great vibe in the centre and thousands of people were eager to see our wooden animals. These hold great sentimental value for many that spent their childhoods at the Dolphin – and so their hotly anticipated return made for the perfect nostalgic weekend.”
The Dolphin also hosted a £50 treasure hunt to celebrate, which saw a total of six £50 vouchers being hidden at undisclosed locations around the centre. Members of the public were encouraged to find these vouchers by clues shared on social media over the course of the weekend.
The centre’s 50th anniversary is officially July 2019, having opened its doors on July 1, 1969. The Dolphin was known for the first two decades as The Arndale Centre, before a newly refurbished centre opened in 1989 under its new name, the Dolphin Shopping Centre.
