Rotary Young Chef Competition

HAROYS’ director, Kenny Woodhead, is relishing his role as one of the organisers in the
Rotary Young Chef of the year competition 2019.

Kenny is arranging the first & second of five stages in this national competition to support
and encourage development of cookery skills.

“With our focus on kitchens and how they can often be the focal point of the family, it’s great
to encourage young chefs to learn the importance of nutrition and budgets – and to hone
their culinary skills at the same time,” says Kenny.

The Rotary Young Chef Competition is a well-established and successful competition
organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland and is sponsored
by Filippo Berio, the well known olive oil producer.

The challenge is open to all students in full time education aged between 11 and 17 who can
apply via their school, college or youth organisation.
The contestants will be asked to prepare a healthy three-course meal for two people costing
less than £15.00 in just two hours and aims to encourage young people to:
- Learn how to cook a healthy meal
- Develop food presentation skills
- Consider food hygiene issues
- Develop organisational and planning skills
- Develop an ability to cope in a demanding situation

Kenny added: “There are four heats to be hosted by schools or colleges. The winner of each

local heat is entered into the district finals which will take place between January and mid-
February at the Escoffier Restaurant on Bournemouth and Poole College’s, Lansdowne
Campus. As the competition hots up, the winner and runner up from each district final will be
entered into a regional final in March. The national final will take place on Saturday 27 th April
at Leeds City College.

Judges for the Dorset district are Celebrity Chef Sarah Ali Choudhury, the Senior Chef
Demonstrator/Instructor, David Marshall and John Taylor from the Savoy hotel who is also a
sponsor.

John Taylor said: The Westbourne Rotary Club was co-founded in 1995 by one of the
previous managers at The Savoy and we are honoured to continue his good work. We
regularly enjoy working closely with the community and are delighted to support this initiative
for young people. Another annual event which has now become a tradition is our community
day which will take place in The Savoy gardens on 1 st  June 2019.”

Kenny Woodhead said; “Haroys are committed to the future, whether that’s sustainability of
the products that we use, or the community. We pride ourselves in investing in our future
generations and already run a comprehensive apprenticeship programme at Haroys, so to
be involved in the Rotary Club’s Young Chef Competition is viewed as just an extension of
what we already believe in.”
